Solar and batteries for Colac, Birregurra and the Colac Otway district

Farms, sheds and bigger roofs, about an hour from our workshop

Colac and the towns around it, from Birregurra and Elliminyt out to Beeac, Coragulac, Barongarook and the Otway foothills, are a regular run for our crews. It is about an hour’s drive from our Moolap workshop, and we travel out for every job with our own electricians, never subcontractors.

Many of the properties we work on here are rural: farmhouses, lifestyle blocks and dairy country with big sheds and long driveways. A large north-facing shed roof is often the best place for panels, with cable run underground to the house. That is why several of our recent systems in the district are 14 kW and larger.

Inland Western District weather shapes the design as well. Summer days run hotter than on the coast, and panels produce a little less in high heat, while winter brings frosty, clear mornings and short days. We size each system on your winter use as well as summer, and keep batteries and inverters out of direct sun.

What a Birregurra customer said

“My family and I are very happy with the process, service and installation of our off grid Velocity solar system. They are knowledgeable of their products, were accomodating with our installation hold ups and very efficient. We have the install in our shed and it is very neat and compact. I would highly recommend Velocity to anyone who is considering solar power.”

Backup power and off-grid options

Properties near the end of a rural line, especially towards the Otways, can lose power more often than homes in town. A battery set up for backup keeps the circuits you choose running, such as the fridge, water pump, lights and internet. Your written quote lists exactly which circuits are backed up.

Where a grid connection is costly or not possible, an off-grid system with a large battery and generator backup can run the whole property. We have built them in the district. Off-grid has to be sized for the worst week of winter, so we design it from your real loads, not a rule of thumb.

Powercor, travel and install time

Colac and the surrounding district are on the Powercor network, the same as Geelong, so we look after the connection application and export limit as part of the job. Rural lines can carry tighter export limits, which is one more reason a battery often pays its way out here.

A solar system under 8 kW usually takes one day to install, and a larger one two days. A battery adds one to two days, so a big solar and battery job on a farm can take three to four days. We confirm the timeframe in your written quote.

Solar around Colac FAQs

Do you really travel to Colac and Birregurra?

Yes. Colac is about an hour from our Moolap workshop, and our rebate records show more than 60 installs across the Colac Otway district since 2017, in towns such as Colac, Elliminyt, Birregurra, Barongarook and Coragulac. The same crews that work in Geelong do these jobs.

How long does solar take to pay for itself on a Colac property?

As a rough guide, and subject to many factors, solar on its own pays for itself in about 5 to 7 years, solar with a battery in about 6 to 8 years, and a battery on its own in about 10 years. Your usage, tariff, export limit and how much power you use in the daytime all change this, so we work it out from your own bills.

Can you put the panels on my shed instead of the house?

Often, yes, and on farms it is common. If the shed has a strong, north-facing roof we mount the panels there and run cable to the house switchboard, or set the shed up as its own supply. Cable runs, trenching and switchboard work are checked at the site visit and included in your quote.
