Solar and batteries for Portarlington homes

Bay-front beach houses, settled family homes and new estates

Portarlington sits on the northern shore of the Bellarine, looking across Port Phillip to Melbourne. The town has three kinds of homes we work on: older beach houses and holiday places near the foreshore and the ferry pier, settled brick homes in the streets behind, and brand-new estates on the edges of town.

It is about 25 minutes from our Moolap workshop, along the Portarlington Road through Drysdale. Our own electricians do every job; we never send Bellarine work to subcontractors.

The battery pictured is a Sigenergy SigenStor we installed in Portarlington in October 2026, fitted in a covered alcove with protective bollards.

What a Portarlington customer said

“Velocity Solar put 17 solar panels on our roof at the end of February. I’ve never had so much fun checking a phone app – showing the panels’ utilization at different times of the day. The data explaining how much CO2 emissions we are saving is good to read. … Even on very cloudy days the panels are generating some power. The installers were very competent and friendly – they were up on the roof one day when it was a sweltering 39c! Velocity Solar were recommended to me by a trusted friend and I am very happy to pass on that recommendation to anyone contemplating joinig the solar revolution.”

Designing for the bay front

Salt from the bay. Northerly winds push spray off Port Phillip straight onto the foreshore streets. On those homes we use corrosion-rated rails, stainless fixings and panels certified for salt-mist exposure, and we mount batteries and inverters in a garage, carport or covered alcove rather than on an exposed wall. A rinse of the panels once or twice a year helps too.

Battery upgrades lead the way. Two-thirds of our recent homeowner jobs in Portarlington were batteries added to solar the household already had. If you already have panels, storing the daytime surplus for the evening is often the next step. We check whether the existing inverter can stay or whether a battery with a built-in inverter is simpler.

Holiday homes. If the house sits empty for weeks at a time, a large battery may not pay its way. We will tell you that, and size the system for how you actually use the house.

Install time, payback and the Powercor connection

Adding a battery to existing solar is usually one to two days. A new solar system takes one day under 8 kW and two days above that, plus one to two days if a battery goes in at the same time. Your quote confirms the timeframe.

Payback is subject to many factors, including your tariff, export limit and when you use power. As a rough guide: solar alone about 5 to 7 years, a battery on its own about 10 years, and solar with a battery about 6 to 8 years.

Portarlington is on the Powercor network, like the rest of the Bellarine. We handle the connection paperwork and export settings. See typical system prices in our price guide.

Solar in Portarlington: common questions

Will salt air from the bay damage solar panels in Portarlington?

Not if the system is chosen and fitted for the coast. Salt mostly attacks cheap rails, fixings and exposed electrical gear. On Portarlington foreshore streets we use corrosion-rated rails, stainless fixings and salt-mist rated panels, and keep the battery and inverter under cover. Rinsing the panels once or twice a year also helps.

Can I add a battery to my existing solar in Portarlington?

In most cases, yes. Six of our nine recent homeowner jobs in Portarlington were batteries added to existing solar, using Sigenergy SigenStor, Tesla Powerwall 3 and GoodWe batteries. Which one suits depends on your current inverter, switchboard and how much power you use at night, which we check at a free site visit.

Is a battery worth it for a Portarlington holiday home?

Sometimes not. A battery earns its keep by being used every evening. If the house is empty for weeks at a time, solar alone may make more sense, or a smaller battery. We look at how often the house is lived in before we recommend anything.
