Lorne and Apollo Bay are two of the best-known towns on the Great Ocean Road, about 45 minutes apart along the coast, with the Otway Ranges rising behind both. Lorne is famous for its long pier and the Pier to Pub ocean swim, one of the largest open-water swimming events in the world, along with the Falls Festival held nearby over New Year. A short drive into the hills brings you to Erskine Falls, one of the best-known waterfalls in the Otways.
Apollo Bay, further along the coast, has a working fishing fleet alongside its tourism trade, and sits right at the edge of Great Otway National Park — the start (or end) of the Great Ocean Walk, and the gateway to Cape Otway, with its historic lighthouse and wild koala colonies. It has a quieter, more rugged feel than Lorne, with rainforest, waterfalls and wildlife all close by.
Both towns see a big seasonal swing in population — quiet through winter, packed through summer and over holiday periods — which affects how a solar and battery system should be sized, especially for holiday homes and short-stay accommodation. Being tucked under the Otway Ranges also means more tree cover and shade to account for than an open coastal block, something we check on-site rather than assume.
