Solar and batteries for Winchelsea and its rural surrounds

A Barwon River town with bigger blocks, about 45 minutes from our workshop

Winchelsea sits on the Barwon River on the Princes Highway, halfway between Geelong and Colac. Inside the town there are older homes near the river and the main street, and new estates growing on the edges. Outside it, the blocks get much bigger quickly: lifestyle acreage, farms and properties with large machinery sheds.

Our crews make the 45-minute drive from Moolap for every job. The same electricians who work in Geelong install here, and we come back for service.

Larger properties are where Winchelsea stands out. Our two biggest recent systems here are both over 13 kW with 40 kWh of battery storage, which would be rare on a suburban Geelong block. The rural roof pictured is one of ours at nearby Deans Marsh.

Recent installs in Winchelsea

Our rebate records show 28 installs at Winchelsea addresses since 2019. Recent homeowner jobs, by month only:

  • June 2026: a 15.8 kWh Fronius Reserva battery added to an existing Fronius system
  • May 2026: 6.6 kW of Trina panels with an 8 kWh Sigenergy SigenStor
  • April 2026: 13.3 kW of AIKO panels with a 40 kWh three-phase SigenStor
  • October 2025: 15.2 kW of AIKO panels with a 40 kWh three-phase SigenStor
  • April 2025: 6.1 kW of AIKO panels with a Sigenergy hybrid inverter and battery

We have also fitted solar to six new homes in Winchelsea for a local builder. Those are left out of the battery figures.

A Winchelsea system, one year on

The October 2025 system above, 15.2 kW of solar with a 40.3 kWh SigenStor battery, produced roughly 18,500 kWh in its first year, measured by its own Sigenergy monitoring. That is about what a well-sized system on a big, unshaded rural roof can do.

It is one of the homes on our case studies page, alongside real results from Barwon Heads, Ocean Grove, Torquay and more.

Rural blocks, sheds and long cable runs

Shed or ground-mounted panels. On a rural block the best spot for panels is often a big north-facing shed roof, or a ground frame, rather than the house. We trench the cable back to the main switchboard. Trenching and longer cable runs add cost, so we quote them after we have walked the site.

Three-phase supply. Many larger properties around Winchelsea have three-phase power, which suits bigger systems and the three-phase SigenStor batteries we have fitted here. We check your supply before recommending a size.

Backup for the end of the line. Properties at the end of a long rural line can lose power more often than homes in town. A battery set up for backup keeps the circuits you choose running during an outage, such as the fridge, water pump, lights and internet. Your quote lists exactly which circuits are covered.

Bushfire areas. Some properties outside town fall in a bushfire management overlay. We keep equipment clear of vegetation and follow the clearances the site needs.

Install time, payback and the Powercor connection

A system under 8 kW usually takes one day, and over 8 kW two days. A battery adds one to two days, so a big solar and battery job on acreage can take three to four days. Your written quote confirms the timeframe.

Payback depends on many factors, including your tariff and how much power you use in the day. As a rough guide: solar alone about 5 to 7 years, solar with a battery about 6 to 8 years, and a battery on its own about 10 years.

Winchelsea is on the Powercor network. Rural lines can carry tighter export limits, which is another reason a battery often makes sense out here. See typical prices in our price guide.

Solar in Winchelsea: common questions

Do you install solar in Winchelsea?

Yes. Winchelsea is about 45 minutes from our Moolap workshop, and our rebate records show 28 installs at Winchelsea addresses since 2019. The same crews that work in Geelong do these jobs, and we come back for service.

Can you put solar panels on my shed instead of the house?

Often, yes. On rural blocks around Winchelsea a large north-facing shed roof is often the best place for panels. We run the cable back to the house switchboard, usually in a trench. Cable length and trenching are checked at the site visit and included in your quote.

How much does a big rural system produce in Winchelsea?

One of our Winchelsea systems, 15.2 kW of solar with a 40.3 kWh SigenStor battery, produced roughly 18,500 kWh in its first year according to its own monitoring. Output depends on roof direction, shading and system size, so we estimate yours from your own site.
