A Geelong college: 30.8 kW commercial solar on a new school building (2026)
A 30.8 kW commercial solar system on a new building at a Geelong college, fitted in stages around the builder’s program and producing 10,807 kWh in its first four and a half months.
Location: Geelong
Switched on: June 2026 (job completed July 2026)
System: 30.8 kW of solar (70 Trina Solar 440 W panels) with a Sungrow SG30CX 30 kW three-phase inverter and a smart meter
A Geelong college put up a new building, and our team supplied and installed the commercial solar system on it.
Because it was a new build, the panels and wiring went in to suit the builder’s schedule rather than on a single day. Panels were going onto the roof in January 2026, and the system was switched on in June 2026.

What the college needed
A solar system sized for a new school building, fitted while the building was going up so the cabling could be run before the walls and ceilings were closed in. As it was a school site, everyone on our crew who worked there needed a Working with Children Check.
What we installed
We used a single three-phase commercial inverter to run the whole array, with a smart meter so the system can see how much power the building is using.
- Panels: 70 Trina Solar 440 W panels (TSM-440NEG9R.28), 30.8 kW in total.
- Inverter: one Sungrow SG30CX 30 kW three-phase commercial inverter.
- Metering: a Sungrow smart meter on the incoming supply. The building’s main switchboard was too tight for the current sensors on the incoming cables, so we fitted an extra enclosure to house the meter.
- Installed by our team: designed and installed by our own installation team.

Results so far
The system’s Sungrow monitoring recorded 10,807 kWh of solar from switch-on in June 2026 to 19 October 2026:
- June 2026 (part month, from switch-on): 516 kWh
- July 2026: 1,834 kWh (about 1.9 kWh per kW of panels per day)
- August 2026: 2,382 kWh (about 2.5 kWh per kW of panels per day)
- September 2026: 3,526 kWh (about 3.8 kWh per kW of panels per day)
- 1 to 19 October 2026: 2,548 kWh (about 4.4 kWh per kW of panels per day)
The per-day figures are the month’s output divided by the 30.8 kW of panels and the days in the month. Output doubled between July and September as the days got longer. Winter is the low point for any solar system in Geelong, so spring and summer should lift it further. We will update this page when the system has a full year of data.

Solar for schools and businesses
Schools, offices and workshops use most of their power during the day, when solar is producing, which makes them a good fit for solar. If you’re looking at solar for a school, club or business, see our commercial solar page and the commercial solar and battery rebates that may apply.
