The federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate gets smaller on 1 January 2027. If you are weighing up a battery for your Geelong home, here is what changes, what it is worth in real numbers, and how to decide without rushing.

Tesla Powerwall 3 batteries installed by Velocity Solar, Torquay

6.8

STCs per usable kWh until 31 December 2026

5.7

STCs per usable kWh from 1 January 2027

5.2

STCs per usable kWh from 1 July 2027

$3,268

rebate for 16 kWh from 1 January 2027 (was $3,914), at $38 per STC

What changes, and when

The rebate is paid as small-scale technology certificates (STCs) for each usable kilowatt hour (kWh) of battery. The number of certificates per kWh steps down:

  • Until 31 December 2026: 6.8 STCs per usable kWh
  • From 1 January 2027: 5.7 STCs per usable kWh
  • From 1 July 2027: 5.2 STCs per usable kWh

The rebate also tapers by battery size. You get 100% of the certificates for the first 14 kWh, 60% for 14 to 28 kWh, and 15% for 28 to 50 kWh.

To get the current 6.8 certificates per kWh, your battery needs to be installed and signed off by 31 December 2026. Talk to us early if you’re aiming for this year.

A worked example

This table uses exactly the same method as our battery rebate calculator. The certificates for each size tier are added up and rounded down to a whole number, then multiplied by an assumed certificate price of $38 per STC (the calculator’s default setting). Certificate prices move, so treat the dollar figures as a guide. It shows the rebate only, for installs on or before 31 December 2026 versus installs from 1 January to 30 June 2027.

Usable battery sizeRebate by 31 Dec 2026Rebate from 1 Jan 2027Difference
10 kWh$2,584 (68 STCs)$2,166 (57 STCs)$418 lower
13.5 kWh (Powerwall 3)$3,458 (91 STCs)$2,888 (76 STCs)$570 lower
16 kWh$3,914 (103 STCs)$3,268 (86 STCs)$646 lower
24 kWh$5,168 (136 STCs)$4,332 (114 STCs)$836 lower

Our battery rebate calculator uses the same maths, so at $38 per certificate it shows the same figures, for example $3,914 versus $3,268 for 16 kWh. You can move its certificate price slider to see how a higher or lower market price changes the result. The rebate is taken off your price up front, so you never need to claim it yourself.

Lead times: book early, but don’t rush the decision

Installs are usually busiest toward the end of the year, and the cut-off depends on your install date, not the date you sign a quote. A battery adds one to two days to a solar install, but stock and scheduling can add weeks. If the date matters to you, ask for a quote soon and confirm a realistic install window in writing.

That said, the rebate is only one part of the picture. A battery that does not suit your home is not a good buy at any rebate level. If you need more time to understand your usage, take it. The rebate will still be there in 2027, just smaller.

What to check in a quote

  • Usable kWh, not just nominal. The rebate is based on usable capacity.
  • Whether the rebate is already deducted and which certificate price was assumed.
  • Install date commitment and what happens if it slips past 31 December.
  • Backup gateway and any switchboard work listed as inclusions.
  • Installer credentials: accredited installers and an approved seller.
  • Warranty terms and who handles claims.

Who should act before 31 December, and who can wait?

If you already know you want a battery, and your solar is working well, the rebate step-down is a fair reason to get a quote moving now. If you are still unsure about size, backup needs or whether to add solar first, a smaller rebate is not a reason to make a rushed choice. The difference between a good and a poor fit usually matters more than a few hundred dollars of rebate.

Our team can walk through your usage and your switchboard before you commit to anything.

Common questions

Does the rebate apply to a battery added to existing solar?

Yes. A battery added to existing rooftop solar can qualify, as long as the existing system meets electrical safety rules, its inverter is on the Clean Energy Council approved list and the battery system is able to join a virtual power plant (you do not have to join one). A battery installed with no solar at all does not qualify. We check all of this during the quote.

How long does a battery take to pay itself off?

As a rough guide, a battery on its own is about 10 years, and solar plus battery is about 6 to 8 years. This is subject to many factors such as usage, tariff and system size.

Which batteries do you install?

Mostly Sigenergy SigenStor, along with Tesla Powerwall 3 and GoodWe. See our battery range.
