Investing in Solar Storage

A battery stores the solar your panels make during the day that your home isn’t using at the time, instead of sending it to the grid for a small feed-in credit. In the evening, when your panels have stopped producing and tariffs are usually at their peak, the battery runs your home on that stored solar. How much it saves depends on many factors such as your usage, tariff and system size. For typical payback times, see Is a battery worth it in Geelong? in our FAQs below.

When installing a solar storage system in the Geelong area, you can also help reduce the reliance on polluting non – renewable grid energy.  Don’t pay the high high peak tariff rates, save money instead by using your own power. The best thing about installing your own solar storage system is your power is guilt free – not brown coal.

Geelong Solar Storage – Great Long term Investment

A home battery is a long-term purchase. How quickly it pays for itself is subject to many factors, such as your power use, tariff and system size; as a rough guide it is about 10 years for a battery added to existing solar, or 6 to 8 years for solar and a battery installed together.

Solar Battery Rebate

The federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate gives 6.8 small-scale technology certificates for each kWh of usable battery capacity until 31 December 2026, then 5.7 from 1 January 2027. It pays the full rate on the first 14 kWh, 60% from 14 to 28 kWh and 15% from 28 to 50 kWh, and we take it off your price up front. Calculate your battery rebate.

To get the current 6.8 certificates per kWh, your battery needs to be installed and signed off by 31 December 2026. Talk to us early if you’re aiming for this year. What changes on 1 January.

Rebate figures checked October 2026.

Home battery basics: what to know before you buy

What a home battery does

A battery stores the solar power your home does not use during the day, so you can use it in the evening instead of buying power from the grid. A standard solar system has to switch off when the grid goes down. A battery system set up for backup creates its own small grid for your home and stops exporting, so chosen circuits keep running in a blackout and the network stays safe for line workers.

Usable capacity, not just the headline size

Battery size is measured in kilowatt hours (kWh). Compare the usable capacity, which is what the battery can actually deliver, not the nominal capacity on the box. The federal battery rebate is also worked out on usable capacity.

Hybrid systems, or adding a battery to the solar you have

A hybrid system uses one hybrid inverter to run both the panels and the battery, which suits a new install or replacing an old inverter. If your current inverter is working well, the battery can instead sit alongside it with its own inverter. See adding a battery to existing solar for prices.

Power, not just storage

A battery also has a limit on how much power it can supply at once, measured in kilowatts (kW). That decides how many appliances it can run together, which matters for blackout backup and for big loads such as ducted heating or an EV charger.

Lifespan and warranty

All lithium batteries slowly lose capacity as they age. Warranties are written as a number of years plus a minimum share of capacity left, or a limit on the total energy put through the battery, so compare the terms, not just the years. Many home batteries, including the Fronius Reserva, use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells, which handle daily cycling well.

Before you buy a battery: four questions we ask first

We would rather you buy the right battery, or no battery at all, than the wrong one. These are the questions our team works through with every household before we quote.

1. What is the battery for?

If the reason is purely financial, a battery may not be the right choice for you. Payback is subject to many factors: about 10 years for a battery added to existing solar, and about 6 to 8 years for solar and a battery installed together. It also varies widely from home to home: a home that uses little power but has a big system could take far longer, while a high-use home exporting a lot can be much quicker.

When the reasons add up, a battery makes much more sense: using more of your own solar, relying less on the grid, lowering your environmental footprint and keeping the lights on in a blackout. There is no right or wrong reason. Our job is to give you the facts so you can decide.

2. Is it the right size?

Bigger is not automatically better. A battery that is too big for how much power you use costs more than it will ever give back. Too small is a problem too: adding a module later can cost about 1.5 times as much as including it at the start. We size from your actual power use, and you can get a first estimate from our battery size calculator.

3. Should solar and the battery go in together?

If you do not have solar yet, installing solar and a battery together is usually more economical than adding the battery later: one design, one installation and, in most cases, one hybrid inverter running both.

4. Who will look after it in 10 years?

A battery is a long-term purchase, so choose an installer you can still call years from now, and a manufacturer with a real service team in Australia, not just a website. We won’t install anything we don’t back up, and we handle warranty claims with the manufacturer for you. Read more in choosing a solar installer in Geelong: 7 questions to ask.

Home batteries in Geelong FAQs

How much does a home battery cost in Geelong?

Adding a battery to solar you already have typically costs about $11,900 for a 13 to 18 kWh battery (usually a 13.5 kWh Tesla Powerwall 3), $13,500 for 18 to 27 kWh and $17,000 for 27 kWh and over, including GST and after the federal battery rebate. Solar and an 18 kWh or larger battery together typically cost $26,900 to $27,600. Batteries under 13 kWh are a market guide of about $8,600. See our price guide.

How much is the federal battery rebate?

The federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate gives 6.8 certificates per kWh of usable capacity for batteries installed until 31 December 2026, falling to 5.7 from 1 January 2027. It pays the full rate on the first 14 kWh, 60% from 14 to 28 kWh and 15% from 28 to 50 kWh. At current certificate prices that is about $3,450 off a 13.5 kWh battery. Our battery rebate calculator shows your figure.

Which battery suits my home?

It depends on your evening power use, your existing inverter and whether you want blackout backup. A Tesla Powerwall 3 (13.5 kWh, built-in solar inverter) suits many single-phase homes. A Sigenergy SigenStor stacks up to about 54 kWh and can include an EV charger. If you already have a Fronius inverter, a Fronius Reserva connects to it. Most of our recent customers chose 20 kWh or more.

Can I add a battery to my existing solar system?

In most cases, yes. If your inverter is battery-ready the battery connects to it; otherwise we fit a battery with its own inverter alongside your panels, or replace an old inverter with a hybrid one. We check your inverter, roof and switchboard at a free site visit. Adding a 13.5 kWh Tesla Powerwall 3 to existing solar typically costs about $11,900 after the rebate.

Do batteries work during a blackout?

Many can, but only if the system is set up for backup. Tesla Powerwall 3 and Sigenergy SigenStor can both keep chosen circuits running in an outage, and a Fronius Reserva needs the Fronius Backup Controller. What stays on depends on how your switchboard is wired, so we spell out exactly which circuits are backed up in your written quote.

Is a battery worth it in Geelong?

A battery pays back more slowly than solar: about 10 years for a battery added to existing solar, and about 6 to 8 years for solar and a battery installed together, subject to many factors, such as usage, tariff and system size. It pays back sooner if you use a lot of power in the evening, charge an EV or join a virtual power plant. The rebate in 2026 is higher than it will be from 1 January 2027. We model the savings from your own usage before you decide, and we will tell you if it does not stack up.

Do you install batteries on the Surf Coast and Bellarine?

Yes. Our own crews, never subcontractors, install batteries across Geelong, the Bellarine and the Surf Coast. Since the federal battery rebate began in July 2025 our records show battery installs at more than 110 Bellarine addresses and more than 70 in the Surf Coast Shire, from Portarlington and Ocean Grove to Torquay and Apollo Bay.
